Vacuoles and storage

Why?

Vacuoles are storage sacs: in plants a large one holds water and keeps the cell firm.

A wilted lettuce leaf is put in water and its cells' vacuoles swell up like balloons, making the leaf crisp again.

Press the button to rescue a wilted lettuce leaf and see an amoeba digest food.

Drag the picture to look around.

Tiny food vacuoles inside an amoeba each hold a swallowed bit of food that slowly shrinks as it is digested.
