Cell death by apoptosis

Why?

Apoptosis is programmed cell death, a tidy way of removing cells that are damaged or no longer needed.

The webbing between a baby's fingers disappears before birth as those cells shrink and are cleared away.

Press the button to see apoptosis shape a baby's fingers and clear a damaged cell.

Drag the picture to look around.

A cell with badly damaged DNA breaks itself into neat packages that a white blood cell swallows.
