Meiosis

Why?

Meiosis is a cell division that halves the chromosome number and makes four genetically different sex cells.

Matching chromosome pairs swap pieces, then two rounds of division give four cells, each with half the chromosomes.

Press the button to watch one cell make four different sex cells by meiosis.

Drag the picture to look around.

One cell with 4 chromosomes makes four egg or sperm cells with 2 chromosomes each, each a different mix of colours.
