ATP: the energy currency

Why?

ATP carries energy in cells: breaking off its third phosphate releases energy, and respiration rebuilds it.

An ATP molecule is a battery with three phosphate beads; snapping off the last bead releases a flash that powers a muscle fibre.

Press the button to spend an ATP and then recharge it.

Drag the picture to look around.

A cell recycles the same ATP thousands of times a day, recharging ADP back to ATP in the mitochondria like a rechargeable battery.
